유럽의 실외조명 실태는?

"도로는 주황빛, 인도는 흰빛"

유럽은 조명과 관련한 모든 면에서 가장 앞서나가고 있다고 한다.
유럽에는 ▲‘전등기구 디자인의 왕국’ 이탈리아 ▲‘산업용 조명의 최강자’ 독일 ▲‘경관조명의 효시’ 프랑스 ▲‘광원기술의 선두주자’ 네덜란드에 이르기까지 조명 선진국들이 다수 포진해있다.
유럽은 가로등용 조명을 구성하는 노하우도 뛰어나다는 평가를 받고 있다. 이에 유럽의 실외용 조명설비들이 국내와 어떻게 다른지 살폈다.

◆가로등 색깔 우리와 대조〓 유럽에서는 주황빛이 나는 나트륨램프를 도로에, 흰빛을 내뿜는 메탈할라이드램프나 수은등을 인도에 각각 사용하고 있다. 가로등(도로)에 흰빛, 보안등(인도)에 주황빛 광원을 쓰는 우리나라와 정반대다. 나트륨램프는 물체를 도드라지게 보이도록 만든다. 교통사고가 일어날 가능성은 그만큼 줄어든다. 나트륨램프는 그러나 색상구현력(연색성)이 극히 떨어진다. 멀쩡한 사람도 음흉스럽게 보인다. 인도에 백색광을 쓰는 이유다. 백색광 아래서는 상대방이 어떤 색상의 옷을 입었는지 쉽게 구분할 수 있다. 하지만 메탈할라이드램프는 광효율이 일정시간 지난 뒤 뚝 떨어진다. 이에 따라 유럽에서는 광원별 장단점을 살려 주황빛과 흰빛 광원을 섞어 쓰는 곳도 많다.

◆가로등 기둥을 하나로〓 프랑스 파리 시내에서 드골공항으로 향하는 고속도로. 일부 구간의 가로등은 중앙분리대에 세워 길 양옆을 비추고 있다. 가로등을 도로 양옆에 세우는 우리나라와 차이가 큰 차이가 난다. 가로등 숫자가 우리보다 훨씬 적은 셈이다. 자원을 그만큼 절약할 수 있는 것이다. 램프가 들어있는 머리 부분이 도로 쪽으로 목을 쭉 빼놓고 있지도 않다. 반사판 성능을 그만큼 높였다는 증거다. 이 같은 모습은 독일 프랑크푸르트에서도 쉽게 확인할 수 있었다.

◆거슬리는 부분도〓 파리의 경관조명은 정돈된 느낌을 준다. 도시 전체가 나이트클럽을 방불케 하는 중국 상하이와 대조를 이룬다. 경관조명 구성 자체가 어둠을 전제로 하기 때문이다. 하지만 빛이 사방팔방을 뻗어나가는 확산형 조명을 가로등으로 사용한 곳도 많았다. 빛 공해가 우려되는 부분이다. 독일의 경우 아우토반(고속도로)에는 가로등이 거의 없다. 전기료를 아끼기 위한 조치라는 게 현지 가이드의 설명이다. 독일은 또 가로등을 공중에 매달아놓은 곳도 많았다. 도로 양 옆에 기둥을 세워 전선을 공중으로 걸친 뒤 램프를 허공에 설치한 것이다. 빛이 수직으로 뿌려진다는 점에서 효율적인 선택이지만, 미관을 해치는 것까지는 막지 못했다.
